As many of us aging adults and parents begin to notice our children growing up, and becoming more independent and self reliant, we suddenly have more time to reflect on how  we are feeling; how our bodies are changing and how our energy is becoming more relaxed to put it kindly, non-existent on some of the tougher days. Some signs  that we are approaching the dreaded “middle age”, are memory loss, thinning hair, declining or non-existent libido or sexual energy, signs of osteoporosis, pre-mature graying, decline in muscle mass and vital force, a loss of enthusiasm for activities that used to be exciting, the need for reading glasses, and of course, fat appearing in inconvenient places for unknown purposes.   For many women in their late 40s or 50s, menopause is on the horizon or perhaps the hot flashes and irritability have already set in.  For many men, this transition time creates feelings of uncertainty about what he is doing and why.  He may seek for greater meaning in life or be reaching a stage of “burn out” in his career or profession that makes him less motivated to continue on his normal course.

Many of these changes and phases that we experience in our middle years, are going to happen, whether we like it or not.  Many of the uncomfortable effects of normal biological aging, however, can be significantly diminished with attention to our thoughts, attitudes around change and our lifestyles.

The word “longevity” means long life, or a life of long duration.  However, what pleasure will we derive from a long life of pain, fatigue, weakness, depression, impotence, or senile dementia.

The Torah states that it is not enough to wish for someone a long life.  Rather we must wish and want for ourself and for others, a life filled with glorious contribution. We have the energy to do that when in our teens and twenties, without the wisdom; as soon as our wisdom begins to emanate, must our physical bodies correspondingly degenerate?

Absolutely not.  Applying the principles and philosophies of Nature Cure, or Naturopathic Medicine, there are viable solutions to the unyielding decline of hormones,   the thinning of hair, the diminution of cognitive function and the decline of vital force.

Attention to the quality of our sleep, time to meditate, pray, and express gratitude for all that is good; proper nutrition, appropriate exercise including aerobic, stretching and strength training; as well as the implementation of high quality naturopathic medicinal support in the form of specific bio-identical nutrient and hormone replacement therapy.

Prior to menopause,  a woman's body begins making less estrogen and progesterone than it once did.  Men experience a decline in testosterone during male menopause or andropause.  Bio-identical or natural hormones replace the hormones that your body needs to function.  Bio-identical hormones are, molecule-by-molecule, exactly the same as the hormones present in the human body.   Your individual needs must be assessed and a customized medical plan established specifically for you.  The proper implementation of these hormones keep us feeling energetic and youthful, our minds responsive, and our memory keen.  They also help our heart stay healthier, our bones stay stronger and our skin look younger.  There are no side effects to these natural hormones which follow the same normal metabolic pathways as our own hormones.
