Chemicals in our Food
A long time ago, before 1950, food manufacturers used real, natural colors from plants to add colors to foods. If they wanted red, for example, they used beets, and they would get green from chlorophyll. After World War II, however, the chemical industry grew exponentially, and the companies saw a way to make a lot of money by selling artificial colors and flavors.
Food producers saw a way to prepare foods so that they tasted good, looked good, and had pleasing texture using artificial ingredients.
Synthetic and Artificial Food Ingredients
Synthetic food additives are not food. They are not natural. They are chemicals and artificial. Some artificial colors have names like FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, and Citrus Red No. 2. Artificial flavors have names like disodium guanylate and monosodium glutamate. Some food additives are no longer allowed to be used in foods because studies showed they could be harmful to your health.
There are other synthetic food additives, however, that are still allowed to be put into food. Some scientists believe that these additives may not be safe either. They say it’s possible that these additives may cause people to get sick if they eat too much of them. One condition that some researchers say is caused by artificial colors is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Some suggest that fake ingredients can cause allergic reactions.
It’s not too late to Fix it
The healthiest way to eat is to choose whole, natural foods whenever possible. When you do choose processed foods, check to see how many fake colors and flavors are inside. Look for foods that have the least amount of fake ingredients. Here is a clue to finding high-quality foods: the fewer the number of ingredients, the better the chance that it is a higher-quality whole food.
