Is Bottled Water Better Than Tap Water?

Is Bottled Water Healthy

More than $100 billion is spent every year on bottled water globally. But is it really that much better for us than tap water? In 2008 an investigation by the non-profit Environmental Working Group found that some bottled water contains impurities such as untested industrial chemicals. So, this begs the question, is bottled water healthy? However water aside, the plastic used in single-use bottles can pose more of a contamination threat than the water. These bottles can leach chemicals such as polyethylene terephthalate and other carcinogenic chemicals such as DEHA and BBP, benzyl butyl phthalate BBP a hormone disruptor; and because the plastic is porous, you’ll likely get a swill of harmful bacteria with each gulp if you reuse the bottles. After hearing that, do you think bottled water is healthy?

Is Bottled Water Better for You and the Environment

The U.S. uses about 50 billion water bottles a year, most of those plastic containers are not being recycled, according to Elizabeth Royte’s book “Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It.” Transporting the bottles and keeping them cold also burns fossil fuels, which give off greenhouse gasses. Groundwater pumping by bottled-water companies draws heavily on underground aquifers and harms watersheds, according to the Sierra Club, an environmental non-profit group and may take up to three times the water to produce one bottle.

More than 80 percent of recyclable plastic bottles end up in landfills each year. They don’t break down naturally, rather they release toxic chemicals when they finally do decompose, according to the Columbia Water Center. Bottled water companies are also making huge profits by reselling public water at almost 3000 times the price of regular tap.

Is Tap Water Healthy?

So what then about tap water? The most common impurities found in tap water are microbial and organic contaminants. These include aluminum, ammonia, copper, mercury and silver, among many others. Chlorine and fluoride are the two most common toxic chemicals found in tap water. Lead is the most common contaminant found in tap water which can produce brain damage in children and PFOA which has been linked to cancer according to, and the business reports that impurities include dust, dirt, harmful chemicals, biological and radiological contaminants as well as suspended solids which can make the water appear cloudy or hazy. So, is tap water good for you? In my opinion it all sounds gross! In the U.S., drinking water is considered “generally safe” by the EPA – Environmental Protection Agency standards, and supposedly at least 90% of the nation’s community water systems were in compliance with safety standards.

Is Bottled Water Healthier Than Tap Water?

Hmmm, does It make you wonder if your community is within that 90%? Most of the violations of these standards have occurred in Oklahoma, West Virginia and New Mexico, which is comforting if you don’t live in one of those states, however, it isn’t difficult for me to understand why my patients typically come to me stating that they know they don’t drink enough water.
