The Two Secrets of Proper Hydration

Apr 2, 2021

Tips to Stay Hydrated and Reach Your Daily Recommend Water Intake

Did you know your body is composed of 75% water, just like the planet Earth? Your brain is 83% water, as is your blood. Water is crucial to every major physical process in your body. So you can imagine what happens when you get dehydrated! Drinking enough water – at least 64 ounces per day – can help alleviate a host of physical problems and is one of the core components of lasting health.

Chronic Dehydration: Disease, Poor Overall Health, and Quality of Life

One of the most important things to understand about water intake is that dehydration causes your thirst receptors to stop functioning at full capacity.

In other words, the less you drink, the less you want to drink. This is a dangerous condition, and it leads many people into a state of chronic dehydration that may give rise to numerous other health concerns such as gastritis, heartburn, ulcers, chronic muscle pain and headaches.

Not All Beverages are Built the Same

The second crucial thing to understand about getting hydrated is that nothing takes the place of water. All liquids are not created equal! In fact, highly concentrated liquids like coffee and soda will actually draw more water out of your body and worsen dehydration. When many people calculate the amount of water they’ve had to drink during the course of a day, they often include things like soda, tea and sports drinks. However, your body needs at least 64 ounces of pure, unadulterated water to function at it’s best.

A Naturopathic Doctor’s Tips to Hydration

Don’t cheat your body! My suggestion is to buy a water bottle and carry it with you wherever you go. Calculate the number of times you have to fill the bottle in order to reach 64 ounces, and make a goal to drink that amount of water every day. Your body will thank you, and you will find the road to health that much smoother now that you’re giving your body one of the basic building blocks it needs to function – water.
