What Is a Colonic
Frequently we get a caller interested in having a colonic. A Colonic, also known as colon hydrotherapy, is an irrigation system used to flush out large portions of the large intestines. While I may recommend a colonic for an individual who has been backed up for days or weeks as an acute care procedure, I do not recommend colonics to be used as an alternative to addressing the reason or cause of the irregularity in a persons bowel habits.
Muscles of the Intestine, Digestion, and Constipation
Normal peristalsis, which is the involuntary constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the intestine, which creates wave-like movements that push the contents of the colon toward evacuation, happens as a normal part of the cycle of digestion and elimination. One should not need to use devices to enable evacuation of waste. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty voiding or chronic constipation, an evaluation of the gut microflora, digestive enzyme function, level of hydration and choices of food may be recommended.
What Causes a Toxic Gut and How to Fix It
Over time, stool left in the intestines creates fermentation, decay, bloating, gas and what some may refer to as a toxic gut. This condition is best treated holistically by a competent naturopathic doctor.
