Detoxification & Cleansing Program in Hawai’i
The naturopathic detoxification/cleansing programs offered at the Center for Natural Healing in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu, are comprehensive, multi-system, total-body cleansing and natural detoxification programs. They include reducing toxic intake, enhancing toxin elimination and using specific detoxification herbs and medicinals, as well as other supportive physical therapies, diagnostic testing and lifestyle counseling to strengthen and promote optimal function of the organs and cells. Dr. Diana Joy Ostroff understands that we are constantly exposed to toxins found in our modern environment—from food additives and chlorinated water to cleaning products and industrial chemicals—and that detox programs such as colon cleansing and liver detox regimens can be a great boost for the natural immunity. Although the human body is uniquely designed to effectively eliminate and remove these environmental toxins naturally, over time the build up of toxins and waste negatively impact cellular health, DNA integrity and general well-being.
At the Center for Natural Healing, Dr. Diana Joy Ostroff will customize a detox cleanse / detoxification program specific to your individual needs and health goals. We offer a variety of healing modalities to assist you throughout your detoxification processes on your path to restoration of full health. Such modalities include diagnostic and laboratory testing, physical examinations, far-infrared saunas, lymphatic stimulation sessions, therapeutic massages, acupuncture, appropriate supplementation and medicinal recommendations, and lifestyle counseling. When appropriate, a colon cleanse or liver cleanse will be prescribed. Natural medicines may be available for those interested in reducing the pharmaceutical load ,as many individuals learn that after a comprehensive cleanse their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol reach values no longer requiring pharmaceutical intervention. Please call to discuss your particular concerns, or before starting a colon cleansing regimen.
This clinic places a strong emphasis on cleansing the body of these unwanted and potentially dangerous substances.
What is Detoxification?
Detoxification is the process of systematically removing poison or the effects of poison from the body. These poisons, which I will refer to as toxins, come in many forms. They man be chemical additives and preservatives found in most processed and packaged foods purchased at the grocery store. They come from pollution that we inhale, including fertilizers and pesticides used on lawns, in new cars, carpets, dry cleaning agents and household cleaning products. They are rampant in over-the-counter drugs, pharmaceutical medicines, and even many of the “natural” supplements that are sold online and in drug and health food stores and department stores. They are also caused by dietary choices, and may manifest as fatty liver conditions.
Detoxification of the Liver
These toxins, though seemingly very tiny, accumulate throughout the body, like dust in your home. They penetrate the body through the skin, the mucus membranes, the mouth or wherever they come into contact with the body. All toxins will pass through the liver, which is the main filter of the body.
The liver is the solid organ under the ribcage on the right side of the body. This one organ, which is only about the size of your hand, has 700 functions to preform each day, detoxifying the body being only one aspect. Every toxin that is consumed, inhaled or comes into contact with the skin must be filtered through the liver. It is like a bathroom drain, and once it is clogged up, it can no longer accomplish the responsibilities that it is designed to do. The effects of a clogged liver are fatigue, because the liver is inhibited from creating ATP, which is a chemical needed by the brain and body for energy. Depression and low energy will be eminent. The liver, when inundated with toxins, will also be inefficient at breaking down the circulating hormones that are needed in their proper forms and ratios. This will in turn cause PMS, menopausal symptoms, low sex drive and overall feelings of lethargy.
Detoxification of the Lymph Nodes
Toxins are also stored in the lymph vessels. Our lymph systems parallel the blood vessels in the body from head to toe. But unlike the blood vessels, the lymph has no pump. When it becomes infiltrated with toxins, like the lint filter of your drier, your immune system has more impurities to penetrate when attempting to fight infection or reverse disease. These toxins become heavy and literally clog the system, so a detox cleanse is often needed.
Detoxification of Heavy Metals
There are heavy metal residues in our bodies such as mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum and cadmium, which must be detected and removed. These metals come from dental fillings, tuna and other fish, the pipes through which our water runs, as well as vaccinations and other medicinal agents.
Detoxification of Candida and Bad Bacteria
The unwanted microbes and impurities in our intestines are also an important part of a thorough detoxification program, which is best done two times per year. Not only must we remove the undigested food in whatever form, but also the bad bacteria, yeast and parasites that are living on it. Juice recipes and other detox cleanse programs can be a great way to remove these toxins.
Doing a detoxification program, as you may imagine, involves more than stimulating bowel activity. Though this is an important part, it is not the whole picture. It is necessary that the immune system is in optimal condition before beginning. During a detoxification process, there will be die-off of the living microorganisms, as well as dislodged waste products. The immune system must be active, alert and ready to carry away these pollutants effectively, or the process will not be accomplished.
Think of it like shaking a dirty rug, removing hair from the drain or emptying the lint filter in your dryer. Without a broom, dustpan and waste basket, the dirt will just be moved from one place to another.
It is for this reason that your personalized and systematic detoxification program will best be accomplished under the supervision of a licensed naturopathic doctor experienced in administering detoxification protocols.
Detoxification from GMO Foods
The smartest, most preventative step you can take toward detoxing from GMO products is in line with the first principle of naturopathic medicine, which simply states “First, do no harm.” When it comes to GMO, the first step is to avoid consuming foods that may contain GMO products. This is a tall order, since there are not always clear distinctions, yet well worth the effort. The best defense against toxic food in your system is to have a healthy, active gut flora to defend your gut from foreign pathogens. Beneficial flora can be destroyed by an overgrowth of fungus (candida albicans), parasites and a vast array of bad bugs. Use high-quality probiotics to give your body its first line of defense. Keep your liver clean. Your liver has roughly 700 functions to perform each day—there is a lot depending on it! Detoxification is one of its primary roles. Sometimes the organ needs a chance to rest too. A liver cleanse or liver detox program can help ensure that your liver is healthy and well-functioning. Make sure your liver has a variety of fresh, organic green vegetables and wheatgrass, and keep the stimulants to a dull roar. Caffeine, alcohol and soft drinks add stress to the liver, slowing down it’s detoxification pathways. Drink lots of pure, filtered, alkaline water to balance out the acid waste in your system. Do not overeat, and avoid processed foods. They add insult to a body that is needing support, not extra weight to support!
